Museum Of Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology has played an important role in the history of medicine. The Foundation’s Museum of Ophthalmology preserves this history and translates it into an educational resource for use by fellow ophthalmologists, medical historians, researchers and the public as they seek to understand ophthalmology’s contributions to society and address similar challenges today and in the future.

This “ Museum of Ophthalmology” at Retina Foundation is the first and probably the only one of its kind in India. The museum houses a collection dating back to the early 18th Century and it traces the history of ophthalmology through its collection of over 300 artifacts, rare books and archives. The collection, dating from the early 18th Century., includes surgical instruments, spectacles, numismatics, stamps, personal papers and oral histories.

It educates people about the eye, vision and the history of eye care. Established in 1989, the Museum of Ophthalmology is dedicated to the pioneers of Ophthalmology, in India and abroad. This museum was located within our premises till January 2020

In February 2020 , the  museum has been donated by Dr P N Nagpal on behalf of Retina Foundation to the All India Ophthalmic Society s newly built headquarter located at New Delhi . He personally oversaw its relocation and inaugurated it on “
